Sandtray Therapy Training - The Humanistic Approach!

Sandtray therapy is a dynamic and expressive form of psychotherapy that allows clients to express their inner worlds through symbol and metaphor. Humanistic sandtray therapy emphasizes a deep and accepting therapeutic relationship and an approach to sandtray processing that focuses on here-and-now experiencing. We believe that as people grow and develop in childhood and adolescence, they all lose touch with who they are. They may have been taught that certain feelings are acceptable while others are not. In this process of denying who they truly are, they become disconnected from their true selves. Humanistic sandtray therapy provides an experience of reconnecting to one’s true self, of rediscovering dreams, hopes and visions.

Like play therapy with young children, sandtray therapy provides an experience that is active, nonverbal, indirect, and symbolic. However, with clients who are 15 and older and do not have the developmental limitations of preoperational and concrete operational children, humanistic sandtray therapy capitalizes on the verbal and abstract thinking abilities of...

The Art of Humanistic Sandtray Therapy!

Humanistic therapists view the client as self-actualizing and "endowed with an inherent tendency to develop his or her potential" (Cain, 2002, p. 3). Clients are seen as having the ability to use inner resources for growth. Humanistic therapists believe that people are capable of being self-aware and responsible for the choices they make. Clients are viewed as social beings that have a powerful need to belong. In humanistic psychotherapy, the therapeutic relationship is the fundamental source of constructive change in the client (Cain, 2002). The primary goal in the therapeutic relationship is to create an optimal climate for growth. Rogers noted, "Most children, if given a reasonably normal environment which meets their own emotional, intellectual and social needs, have within themselves sufficient...

Sandtray Therapy Book - Sandtray Therapy: A Humanistic Approach

The purpose of this book is to provide practitioners, advanced graduate students and supervisors a model of sandtray processing from a humanistic perspective. The DVD that accompanies this book demonstrates a way to process a sandtray therapy session with a real adult client. The session on the DVD is an actual sandtray therapy session that is unedited. The primary focus of this book is on one way to do sandtray therapy with adults and adolescents and on the DVD I demonstrate how I do it.

If you are a practitioner/clinician or a graduate student in counseling or a related field who is curious about sandtray, this book will help you provide quality interventions with clients and may stimulate interest in further training. If you are a supervisor who wants to use sandtray with supervisees, I have included a chapter that covers the use of sandtray in supervision. If you are a play therapist...

Sandtray Therapy Training

We use an experiential approach with clients and believe that trainees learn best when we can create an experience for them in a safe learning environment. We believe strongly that learning by doing is the best way to learn how to use sandtray with adolescent and adult clients. In our sandtray training groups, trainees create a sandtray the first group session. Homeyer and Sweeney (1998) recommended that the first step in learning how to use sandtray with clients is to experience sandtray first as the client. This is very important and this experiential activity is the first phase of learning by doing. Once you experience the power of the modality as you create and process your scene, you will have a sense of how therapeutic sandtray can be. You will also have an experience of how and when to use it with clients.

Weekly Training
If you live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, the best way to learn this approach is over an extended period of time. In the training group, the leader demonstrates the humanistic approach using trainees as "clients" on a rotating...

Sandtray Therapist Certification - Sandtray Therapy Institute!

Sandtray Therapy Institute (STI) is pleased to announce an exciting development in sandtray therapy training: sandtray therapist certification. Participants who meet the requirements and complete the necessary training and supervision will be eligible to become Certified Humanistic Sandtray Therapists (CHST©). Based on an experiential training model developed by STI, trainees have the opportunity to learn how to process sandtrays effectively by facilitating a feeling-based, here and now experience with clients.

There are two levels of certification. Starting September 19, STI will provide intensive sandtray therapy training for those interested in completing the Level I (Skill Training) Certification. The training is offered on the weekend to allow practitioners and advanced students...
